DEFINITION

A numeric pattern is a sequence of numbers that follow a specific pattern. An example of a numeric pattern is one where there is a constant difference between consecutive terms. In other words, the same number would be added to or subtracted from each consecutive term.

TERMINOLOGY AND NOTATION

Examine the number pattern: 4 ; 7 ; 10 ; 13 ; …
• Another name for a pattern is a sequence
• Each number in the sequence is called a term
The sequence can be described in words as follows:
The l st term is 4. Add 3 to the l st term to obtain the 2nd term which is 7. Continue adding
3 to each term to obtain the next term.
